Methodology

Trichrome stain with microscopic examination and interpretation. 

Specimen Requirements

Stool and other intestinal tract specimens (sigmoidoscopic material, duodenal aspirates)
Sterile container
Stool:  See Ova and Parasites requirements.
Sigmoidoscopic specimens or duodenal aspirates:  Collected in Special Studies.

 

Notify laboratory 1/2 hour before specimen is transported to laboratory.

Monday through Sunday

Within 48 hours after receipt in laboratory.

Additional Information

Use: To detect presence of ova and parasites in stools and other intestinal tract specimens (sigmoidoscopic material, duodenal aspirates).

Specimen Transport Temperature and Stability

Stool:  See Ova and Parasites requirements.
Sigmoidoscopic specimens or duodenal aspirates:  Transport specimen, unpreserved and undiluted, to laboratory immediately.
