Additional Information
Measures small amounts of albumin that may be present in the
urine. Used for early detection and monitoring of Diabetic
Nephropathy. Diabetes is now the most common cause of end
stage renal disease (ESRD). About
20%-30% of patients with Type I and Type II diabetes develop
evidence of nephropathy. If left untreated, a significant
number of these patients will progress to ESRD. Early
intervention has the greatest impact on improving the course of
diabetic nephropathy. Type II diabetics should be screened for
microalbuminuria at the time of diagnosis and annually
thereafter. Microalbuminuria rarely occurs with Type I
diabetics of short duration. Microalbumin screening
with Type I diabetics should be performed annually beginning after
5 years of disease onset. A creatinine is run in conjunction
with an albumin to help correct for dilutional variations in random
urine samples.Factors that Transiently Interfere with Urinary
Screening for Microalbuminuria:
Increases in albuminuria |
Decreases in albuminuria |
Blood in urine Congestive heart failure Exercise within 24 hours Excessive protein intake Fever Uncontrolled diabetes Uncontrolled hypertension Urinary tract infection Vaginal fluid contamination of specimen |
ACE inhibitors Malnutrition Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs |
