Test Code LAB434 Potassium - Random Urine
Useful For
Evaluation of electrolyte balance, acid-base balance. A major application of urine collection for potassium is the
evaluation of hypokalemia. The kidneys do not respond quickly to potassium deprivation. There is renal wastage of potassium in secondary aldosteronism. Glucocorticoids also cause diuresis of potassium. Urinary potassium may be elevated with dietary (food and/or medicinal) increase, hyperaldosteronism, renal tubular acidosis, onset of alkalosis and with other disorders.
