Microscopic Examination 

Specimen Requirements

Clear/transparent cellulose tape slide preparation of perianal region.

 

Specimen is best obtained in early morning, before bathing.  Clear tape should be used.  The nontransparent type is unsatisfactory.  A 3-inch piece of tape is placed over the end of a glass slide or tongue depressor, sticky side out.  The anal folds are spread apart and the mucocutaneous junction is firmly pressed in all four quadrants.  The tape is then pressed over the slide. Submit slide in covered container.

Additional Information

Use: To detect cases of pinworm infestation (enterobiasis), Enterobius vermicularis parasitic infestation.  The most satisfactory means of diagnosing pinworm infection is by the recovery of eggs or female worms from the perianal region.  Only 5%-10% of infected persons have demonstrable eggs in their stool.
