Specimen Required

Vaginal Swab in a BD MAX UVE Specimen Collection Kit (BD, Cat. No. 443376) aka BD Molecular Swab Collection kit.

Collection Instructions:

 

This test replaces the BD Affirm Vaginitis Screen by DNA.

Specimen Stability Information

Swabs must be transferred from the swab sheath to the BD Max UVE sample buffer tube directly (preferred) or within 2 hours of collection when kept at 2-30º C.

 

Specimens in BD Max UVE sample buffer tubes are stable for 8 days at 2-30º C or for a maximum of 14 days at 2 – 8º C.

 

Swabs not placed in the sample buffer tubes are stable for 2 hours when kept at 2-30º C

 

Due to the nature of collection, this test is not considered irretrievable.

Reject Due To

  •   Swabs not placed in the sample buffer tubes that have exceeded the 2 hour stability.
  •   Specimens not transported within the appropriate temperature requirements.
  •   Specimens lacking two patient identifiers
    • 1-Patient’s first and Last name
    • 2-Patient’s Date of Birth
  •   Specimens contaminated with lubricant

Method Name

The test utilizes real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for the amplification of specific DNA targets and utilizes fluorogenic target-specific hybridization probes to detect and differentiate DNA from:

  • Bacterial vaginosis markers (Individual markers not reported)
    • Lactobacillus spp. (L. crispatus and L. jensenii)
    • Gardnerella vaginalis
    • Atopobium vaginae
    • Bacterial Vaginosis Associated Bacteria-2 (BVAB-2)
    • Megasphaera-1
  • Candida spp. (C. albicans, C. trpicalis, C. parapsilosis, C. dubliniensis)
  • Candida glabrata
  • Candida krusei
  • Trichomonas vaginali
