Test Code LAB1230235 Culture, Fungus - Blood
Useful For
Isolate and identify fungi, establish the diagnosis of fungemia, fungal endocarditis, and disseminated mycosis in immunocompromised patients, transplant patients, patients with leukemia and lymphoma, and patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). This method is most suitable for the isolation of filamentous or dimorphic fungi. Candida species can be reliably detected in bacterial blood cultures incubated for 5 days.
Cautions
Limitations:
- A single negative culture does not rule out the presence of fungal infection.
- Routine blood culture held 4 weeks for recovery of fungi; isolation and presumptive ID of fungi.
Reflex Testing: May include: Definitive Identification (Bacterial and Fungal); Sensitivity
