Useful For

The PCR test is a very sensitive and specific test for Giardia lamblia, Cryptosporidium parvum or hominis, and Entamoeba histolytica. It may detect organisms that cannot be found in traditional microscopic Ova and Parasite microscopic examinations.

 

If the PCR test is negative, then a traditional microscopic O&P examination will be automatically ordered, so that other parasites may be ruled out

Specimen Required

 

Patient should wait at least 1 week after barium procedures or laxative administration before collecting stools.

Specimen Minimum Volume

10 ml raw stool

 

Specimen Stability Information

Stable 24 hours at room temperature (≤25°C) or 5 days at 2 – 8°C.

Store in refrigerator (2-8°C).

  • Lacking Two Patient Identifiers:
    • 1-Patient's First & Last name 
    • 2-Patient's Date of Birth
  • Diapers are not acceptable.
  • Stools should not be contaminated with urine, water or soap.  
  • Frozen specimens not acceptable
