24 Hour Urine Container with acid  (one or two containers)

24 Hour Urine Container Instructions

 

Container MUST be labeled with: Office Location, Patient’s First and Last Name and Date of Birth

 

24 hour urine, Plastic 24 hour urine container with 25 mL of 6N HCL added prior to collection. 

Acid can be added after collection provided the sample has been refrigerated.

 

Can also use HCL if necessary to collect with other 24 hour urine collections.


Drugs affecting mineral metabolism should be withdrawn if possible.  These drugs include antacids, phosphates, glucocorticoids, carbonic anhydrase inhibitors, anticonvulsants and diuretics, including thiazides.  Thiazides are used therapeutically to lower urine calcium excretion.

 

Instruct patient:

  • To label container with Date and time collection started, Date and time collection finished. 
  • Void and DISCARD the first-morning specimen and to record exact time of voiding.
  • Patient should collect all subsequent voided urine for remainder of day and night.
  • Collect first-morning specimen on day 2 at same time as noted on day 1.
  • Collection is complete.
  • Keep urine refrigerated during entire collection. Screw lid on securely.

Additional Information

Quantitative analysis of calcium excreted in a 24-hour urine specimen.  Reflects intake, rates of intestinal calcium absorption, bone resorption and renal loss.  Those processes relate to parathyroid hormone and vitamin D levels. Evaluation of bone disease, calcium metabolism, renal stones (nephrolithiasis), idiopathic hypercalciuria and especially, parathyroid disorders.  Follow-up of patients on calcium therapy for osteopenia. 

Limitation:  Decreased on patients on oral contraceptives

Specimen Transport Temperature and Stability

Keep urine refrigerated during entire collection 
Transport the specimen promptly to the laboratory
