Specimen Requirements

Urine: clean catch, 12 mL (cc).  A smaller volume can compromise results.

NOTE:  Grossly bloody, pyridium, and other substances may interfere with routine UAR.  Test will be credited and microscopic exam performed.
First morning specimen is always preferred; however, specimen can be collected at any time. 


A mid-stream clean catch or cath specimen is preferred if there is the potential for urine culture request on same specimen. Indicate clean catch, cath specimen or void collection.

Specimen Transport Temperature and Stability

Specimen is stable 24 hours when  refrigerated at  2-8° C.

Transport to laboratory as soon as possible.



1. Specimen at room temp over 2 hours.
2. RRMC: Specimen refrigerated over 24 hours (less than 6 hours
   TRMC:  Specimen refrigerated over 24 hours
3. Inadequate labeling.
4. Improper collection.






Reasons for Rejection

Quantity not sufficient (QNS)

Specimen at room temp over 2 hours

Lacking Two Patient Identifiers:

         1-Patient's First & Last name 

         2-Patient's Date of Birth

Day(s) Test Set Up

Routine - Performed on all shifts

ASAP - 2 hours after receipt of specimen in lab

STAT - 1 hour after receipt of specimen in lab

Screens for kidney and urinary tract diseases as well as some systemic and metabolic disorders of the body.
