Additional Information

Lipase measurements on serum and plasma are used exclusively to investigate pancreatic disorders, usually
pancreatitis.  After an attack of acute pancreatitis, the serum lipase activity increases within 4 hours, peaks at about 24 hours and decreases within 8 to 14 days.  Lipase elevations usually remain longer than those of amylase.  Additionally, about 20% of patients with pancreatitis may have normal amylase with an elevated lipase level.
