Specimen Required
Primarily for dermatophytic specimens (skin, hair, nails). Any specimen for direct examination for the presence of fungus. Dermatophytic specimens (skin, hair, nails): Wipe affected area with alcohol swab. Place between 2 glass slides, in Petri dish or other clean container
- Skin:
- Scrape active border of lesion with surgical scalpel or edge of glass microscope slide.
- Nails:
- Clip generous portion of affected nail and obtain scraping of excess keratin produced beneath nail.
- Hair:
- Pluck representative abnormal hairs.
- Other Sites: Genital, mouth, respiratory, sterile body fluids, tissues, etc.:
- Preparation as for any micro sample.
- Collect in appropriate container (culturette tube, sterile container, capped syringe).
