Specimen Required

Primarily for dermatophytic specimens (skin, hair, nails). Any specimen for direct examination for the presence of fungus. Dermatophytic specimens (skin, hair, nails):  Wipe affected area with alcohol swab. Place between 2 glass slides, in Petri dish or other clean container

 

  • Skin: 
    • Scrape active border of lesion with surgical scalpel or edge of  glass microscope slide.
  • Nails: 
    • Clip generous portion of affected nail and obtain scraping of  excess keratin produced beneath nail.
  • Hair: 
    • Pluck representative abnormal hairs.
  • Other Sites: Genital, mouth, respiratory, sterile body fluids, tissues, etc.: 
    • Preparation as for any micro sample.
    • Collect in appropriate container (culturette tube, sterile container, capped syringe).

Dermatophytic specimens (skin, hair, nails):  Store at room temperature.
