Additional Information
FSH is secreted by the B-cells of the anterior pituitary under
the control of Gonadotropin Releasing Hormone produced in the
hypothalamus. FSH stimulates the manufacture of steroid
hormones from gonadal tissue. Circulating levels of FSH are
controlled by a negative feedback effect on the hypothalamus by
steroid hormones. FSH is elevated in primary gonadal failure,
ovarian or testicular agenesis, Klinefelter’s syndrome,
Turner’s syndrome, castration, alcoholism and
menopause. FSH is decreased in anterior pituitary
hypofunction, secondary hypogonadism, anorexia nervosa, prostatic
cancer, ovaries that secrete estrogens or
androgens, hemochromatosis, sickle cell anemia.
