Useful For
Used to establish a diagnosis of adrenocortical insufficiency, Addison’s disease, adrenocortical hypersecretion, Cushing’s disease; malfunction of any of the organs in the hypothalamus, pituitary, adrenal cortex axis will result in alteration of the cortisol levels. Cortisol is physiologically increased in patients with hypoglycemia, stress, and in pregnancy.
Cortisol Stimulation Test:
(1) Baseline Cortisol
(2) Inject Cortrosyn or equivalent
(3) 30 minute post-injection Cortisol
(4) 60 minute post-injection Cortisol
Cortisol levels usually peak about 45 to 60 minutes after injection of Cortrosyn. The normal response is an approximate doubling of the cortisol value.

Yellow (Gold) top tube (SST)- Outpatient clients MUST draw SST
Lithium Heparin Green top tube
2 Yellow microtainers (outpatients)
2 Green microtainers (inpatients)
Blood may be drawn between:
5:00 and 10:00 A.M. for A.M. draw
After 4:00 P.M. for P.M. draw.
Specimen Minimum Volume
1.0 mL whole blood (for all ages)
Specimen Stability
Centrifuge and refrigerate within 2 hours of collection
Primary tube: Spun SST stable 24 hours at 2° to 8° C
Serum stable 48 hours if aliquoted and refrigerated at 2° to 8° C
