Additional Information
This is the test for IgM antibody to the Core Antigen of the
Hepatitis B Virus. It is a marker of acute infection and is
usually present for up to six months after exposure.
Anti-HBc appears 5-14 days after “e” antigen and can be found shortly before HBsAg is no longer detectable. The period between the disappearance of HBsAg and the appearance of HBsAb is often called the “core window.” Simultaneous presence of HBc-IgM with Hepatitis B Surface Antigen indicates an acute infection. A positive HBc-IgM with a negative HBsAg suggests a recent acute infection. In this case, subsequent testing for Anti-HBs and/or Anti-HBe will help track the progression toward immunity.
