Additional Information
Prolactin is secreted by the lactotroph cells of the anterior
pituitary. The hypothalamus, which controls prolactin
secretion by a predominantly inhibitory mechanism, releases a
prolactin inhibitory factor (PIF) which inhibits prolactin
secretion by the pituitary. The only known physiological
function of prolactin is the stimulation of milk production.
The significance of prolactin in normal males and nonpregnant
females is poorly defined. The prolactin assay is used to aid
in the diagnosis of prolactinomas, amenorrhea, galactorrhea or
infertility and to monitor surgery, chemotherapy and radiation
treatments of prolactin-producing tumors.
