Calcium levels have important effects on blood clotting, nerve transmission and muscle contraction.  Calcium
measurements are used in the diagnosis and treatment of parathyroid disease, bone diseases, chronic renal disease and tetany.

Yellow (Gold) top tube (SST)- Outpatient clients MUST draw SST

Lithium Heparin Green top tube

Plain Red top tube

 

Required volume 0.5 ml

 

Outpatient clients MUST draw SST

Specimen Minimum Volume

0.5 ml Whole Blood

Neonatal minimum volume: 0.4 mL whole blood

Specimen Stability

Centrifuge and refrigerate within 2 hours of collection
Spun SST is stable for 48 hours at 2° to 8° C

Serum stable 48 hours if aliquoted and refrigerated at 2° to 8° C

  • Hemolysis
  • Quantity not sufficient (QNS)
  • Lack of Two Patient Identifiers:
    • 1-Patient's First & Last name 
    • 2-Patient's Date of Birth
