Intrapartum screening assay for detection of presumptive GBS colonization.
Special Instructions
Intrapartum testing can only be performed on patients 14 years of age and older. For patients <14 years old and/or antepartum, Group B Strep Culture (LAB1377) should be performed.

Specimen Required
Swabbed sample from the vagina and rectum of obstetric patients.
ONLY Red-capped BBL Liquid Stuart dual swab culturettes are acceptable for this test.
BBL Culturette II Swab Red Cap
Using proper hand hygiene and PPE per standard precautions, collect the specimen aseptically as follows:
Follow patient identification and specimen labeling protocols.
1. Wipe away excessive amounts of secretion or discharge.
2. Remove both marked swabs from the transport container.
3. Carefully insert both marked swabs into the patient’s vagina. Sample secretions from the mucosa of the
lower one-third part of the vagina. Rotate the swabs three times to ensure uniform sample on both swabs.
4. Using the same marked swabs, carefully insert both swabs approximately 2.5 cm beyond the anal
sphincter, and gently rotate to sample anal crypts.
5. Place both marked swabs in the transport container.
Specimen Stability
Specimens can be stored up to 24 hours at 2-25 °C
Reject Due To
- Patient <14 years old
- Swab collected >24 hours prior
- Specimen collected using device other than BBL Culturette II swabs
Interpretation
- GBS Positive- GBS target DNA is detected – Patient likely colonized with GBS.
- GBS NEGATIVE- GBS target DNA cannot be detected - Patient may/may not be colonized with GBS.
- GBS INVALID -Presence or absence of the GBS target DNA cannot be determined. Possible interfering substance present. Recollect if clinically indicated.
