Corneal scraping collected by physician.

 

 

 

Direct inoculation of culture media and microscope slides.
Inoculate room temperature media, making small “C” marks on surface of agar with sterile spatula used to collect scrapings, then apply remaining material to 2 clean glass slides for staining.

 

Day(s) Test Set Up

Monday through Sunday 

Performed daily.  Preliminary report:  24 hours; no growth cultures held for 5 days for detection of slow-growing organisms.  If reflex testing is required, test results will be delayed.

Test Classification and CPT Coding

87070 – Culture, bacterial; any other source except urine, blood or stool, aerobic

87205 – Gram Stain Smear, primary source with interpretation 

Additional Information

Use: Isolate and identify pathogens from corneal scraping.

Specimen Transport Temperature and Stability

Ambient – Transport to laboratory as soon as possible.
