Specimen Requirements
CSF, Sterile tubes of spinal fluid - 2.0 ml (1.0 ml in at least 2 CSF tubes)
Aseptic preparation for aspiration by physician

Monday through Sunday
Routine - same day
ASAP - 2 hours after receipt of specimen in lab
STAT - 1 hour after receipt of specimen in lab
If reflex testing is required, test results will be delayed

Additional Information
Evaluation for bacterial or viral encephalitis, meningitis, meningoencephalitis, mycobacterial or fungal infection, primary or secondary malignancy.
Specimen Transport Temperature and Stability
Submit all specimens to laboratory immediately
Stable for 1 hour at room temperature
Stable 24 hours if refrigerated at 2° to 8° C
