Test Code LAB5180 Tobramycin, Timed
Useful For
There are three options for ordering Tobramycin levels:
TOBPST (post dose), TOBPRE (pre or trough dose) and TOBTIM (extended interval dosing, 12 hours from
beginning of IV infusion). Generally, the TOBTIM sample may be drawn as early as 10 hours from
the start of the infusion. The exact timed request from pharmacy/nursing must be observed.
These requests should not be “bumped” to a more convenient draw time.
Use: Tobramycin is an aminoglycoside
antibiotic whose activity is similar to that of Gentamicin against
gram negative bacteria. Tobramycin exhibits a narrow
therapeutic range which makes its use hazardous, especially in
patients with impaired renal function.
