Specimen Requirements
Sodium Fl (NaF) Gray top tube - preferred
Lithium Heparin Green top tube (must be centrifuged within 1-2 hrs, preferably within 1 hr)
Gray Top Tube (NaF), if centrifuge not available.
Patient does NOT need to be fasting prior to the ingestion of 50
grams of dextrose.
Collect sample 1 hour after ingestion of dextrose.

ASAP - 2 hours after receipt of specimen in the lab
STAT - 1 hour after receipt of specimen in the lab

Additional Information
Use: Establish the diagnosis of diabetes mellitus, evaluation of disorders of carbohydrate metabolism; evaluation of acidosis and ketoacidosis; evaluation of dehydration, coma, hypoglycemia, of insulinoma, neuroglycopenia.
Specimen Transport Temperature and Stability
Centrifuge collection tube and refrigerate within 2 hours of collection. Primary tube: Spun SST stable 24 hours at 2° to 8° C. Serum stable 48 hours if aliquoted and refrigerated at 2° to 8° C.
