Additional Information

The presence of anti-HBs indicates exposure to the Hepatitis B virus either through contact with infected blood or body fluids or by immunization.

Testing for the anti-HBs can be useful for:

1) Evaluating the recovery and prognosis of patients infected with Hepatitis B Virus (HBV)

2) Screening vaccine recipients

3) Evaluating epidemiologic factors associated with transmission of HBV.

Current literature suggests that a level of 10 mIU/mL or greater indicates protective immunity to HBV.

Note:  AHBS is a test to assess the patient’s immune status toward the Hepatitis B Virus. If the question is, “has the patient ever been exposed to Hepatitis B”, then the Hepatitis B Core Total Antibodies (HBC) is the test of choice.
