Useful For
Workup of volume depletion, acute renal failure, acute oliguria and when necessary, differential diagnosis of hyponatremia. In cases of hyponatremia, decreased urine sodium may indicate extrarenal depletion; dehydration (gastrointestinal or sweat loss), congestive heart failure, liver disease or nephrotic syndromes. Increased urine sodium may indicate diuretics, emesis, intrinsic renal diseases, Addison’s disease, hypothyroidism or syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone (SIADH)
