Specimen Requirements

RRMC:

Yellow (Gold) top tube (SST)  

Lithium Heparin Green top tube

Outpatient clients MUST draw SST

 

TRMC:

Plain Red top tube   No SST or PST

 

For PEAK level, draw one hour after completion of the infusion.

Additional Information

Used to monitor therapeutic levels.  Vancomycin has regained clinical popularity for the treatment of
methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and antibiotic-associated diarrhea due to Clostridium difficile. 

The drug is otonephrotoxic and the toxicity may be synergistic with that of aminoglycosides. 

Renal and auditory function should be monitored.

Specimen Transport Temperature and Stability

Centrifuge collection tube within 2 hours of draw

Separated serum or spun SST stable for 48 hours refrigerated (8 hours room temperature).
