Gentamicin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic which exhibits high action against both gram positive and gram negative bacteria.  It exhibits a narrow therapeutic range which makes it hazardous, especially in patients with impaired renal function.

Yellow (Gold) top tube (SST)  (Preferred for outpatients)

Lithium Heparin Green top tube

Green Microtainer

TRMC:  

Plain Red top tube  No SST or PST

 

Patient preparation:  Consult with pharmacy
Draw 12 hours after the start of infusion of first dose

Specimen Minimum Volume

0.5 ml

Neonatal minimum volume: 0.4 mL whole blood

Specimen Stability Information

Centrifuge and refrigerate within 2 hours of collection

Primary tube: Spun SST stable 48 hours at  2° to 8° C

Serum stable 48 hours if aliquoted and refrigerated at 2° to 8° C
