Methodology

Wet Mount Microscopic Examination for Infectious Agents

Specimen Requirements

Vaginal, cervical or urethral discharge
Sterile tube with 1 mL of 0.85% sterile saline
Swab specimen and insert in saline tube.

Day(s) Test Set Up

Monday through Sunday

Routine - 1 hour after receipt of specimen in laboratory; STAT - 15 minutes after receipt of specimen in laboratory.

Test Classification and CPT Coding

87210 – Smear, primary source with interpretation; wet mount for infectious agents.

Additional Information

Use: Establish the presence of Trichomonas vaginalis, yeast and “clue cells".

Specimen Transport Temperature and Stability

Send to laboratory as soon as possible.

Specimen should not be over 1 hour old.  Do not refrigerate.

Specimens greater than one hour old may be examined for yeast and clue cells only.
