Gram Stain with Microscopic Examination and Interpretation
Specimen Requirements
Fresh, raw specimen in sterile container, culturette swabs or
prepared smear on glass microscope slide.

Monday through Sunday
Daily turnaround time; STAT - 30 minutes after receipt of specimen in laboratory. STAT specimens 24/7, routine 0600-2300.

Additional Information
Use: Determine the presence of white blood cells, red blood
cells, epithelial cells and yeast; determine presence and
morphological characteristics of bacteria. The gram stain
is
also used to examine the quality of clinical material
submitted.
Gram stain is included with wound, eye, ear, genital and
lower
respiratory specimens.

Stability: Varies with specimen type and transport, refrigerate
urines.
Send slides only in designated cardboard or plastic slide holders
or in empty specimen cups.
