Culture on Selective Media

Specimen Requirements

Acceptable sources are; Cervical, Urethral, Pharyngeal, Rectal, Eye and Joint fluid.

 

Use preferred E-swab or sterile container.

BBL Culture swab will be accepted if specimen is <24 hrs. old. 

Use of disinfectants or lubricants prior to culture collection should be avoided.

 

Neisseria gonorrhoeae is a fastidious organism. Specimen must be received within 24 hours and should be kept in a humid atmosphere with increased CO2.

Day(s) Test Set Up

Monday thru Sunday

Preliminary in 24 hours. Final report in 72 hours.

If reflex testing is required, test results will be delayed.

87081 – Culture, presumptive, pathogenic organisms, screening only

Additional Information

Use: This culture is used to detect the presence of Neisseria gonorrhoeae.

 

Reflex Testing:  May include:  Presumptive definitive Identification; Beta Lactamase.  Isolates are sent to State lab for confirmation. 

Specimen Transport Temperature and Stability

Transport to Laboratory as soon as possible

Stable up to 24 hours at room temp
