Test Code LAB23 Digoxin

Useful For

Digoxin is a potent cardiac glycoside, isolated from the leaves of Digitalis lanata, widely prescribed for treatment of congestive heart failure, atrial fibrillation, tachycardia and other cardiac disorders.  The clinical use of digoxin is complicated by a high incidence of toxicity.  Since digoxin has a very narrow therapeutic range, the measurement of serum digoxin levels provides useful information in the management if digitalized patients.

RRMC

Therapeutic Range (Heart Failure):  0.5-0.9 ng/mL

To obtain steady-state serum digoxin concentrations, blood samples should be drawn 6-8 hours after the daily dose or just prior to the next scheduled dose.

Considerable intra-individual variations exist in the relationship between digoxin serum concentrations and the dosage administered. In addition, the therapeutic range is narrow and varies from individual to individual. Other factors such as age, general condition, cardiovascular status, and renal function also influence the appropriate therapeutic dose
