Specimen Requirements

Sterile CSF  -  2.0 ml (1.0 ml in at least 2 CSF tubes) – number tube in order of collection.

Aseptic aspiration technique performed by physician.

Additional Information

Evaluation of cells found in CSF: 

Number of RBCs; number of WBCs; differential identification of type of cells seen in cytospun smear.

Specimen Transport Temperature and Stability

Submit all specimens to laboratory immediately. 
Stable for 1 hour at room temperature

Stable 24 hours if refrigerated at 2° to 8° C
