Light Microscopy for Cell Counts

Specimen Requirements

Body fluid - specify type of fluid. Usual aseptic aspiration techniques

Required volume  3 mL: 

1 mL into purple-top tube - mix       Lavender top tube

1 mL into green SST tube - mix        Lithium Heparin Green top tube

1 mL into yellow SST tube                 Yellow (Gold) top tube(SST)

 

Specimen can be collected at any time

STAT - 1 hour after receipt of specimen in lab

Additional Information

Evaluation of all body fluid; i.e. peritoneal, pleural, synovial, and pericardial fluids

Evaluation of RBC and WBC count and cytospin cell identification.

Specimen Transport Temperature and Stability

Submit entire specimen to laboratory immediately
Stable 24 hours if refrigerated at 2° to 8° C

Hemolysis

Quantity not sufficient (QNS)
