Additional Information
Increased levels with meningitis, tuberculosis meningitis, brain
abscess, meningovascular syphilis, CVA (including cases in which no
hemorrhage has occurred), subarachnoid hemorrhage, some cases of
multiple
sclerosis, encephalomyelitis, other degenerative processes causing
neurologic disease; some cases of myxedema, traumatic tap and in
CSF recovered from below the level of obstruction of the spinal
cord. Decreased CSF protein may be seen with dilution from
water intoxication, CSF leak and hyperthyroidism.
LIMITATIONS: Fresh blood in the specimen will invalidate the
protein result. Turbid samples may exhibit a positive
interference. Hemolyzed or xanthochromic specimens may
falsely depress results.
