Additional Information
PSA exists in two forms:
- PSA bound to alpha-1 antichymotrypsin and alpha-2 macroglobin as well as the “free” form (Free PSA).
- Patients with total (bound and free) PSA in the 4-10 ng/mL range who have a non-suspicious digital rectal exam may benefit from a % free PSA as the lower the percent free PSA is, the higher the risk of prostate cancer.
To determine % free PSA, both a total PSA and a free PSA must be run concurrently.
