Screening culture for the presence of Group B Streptococcus (GBS) (Streptococcus agalactiae) in vaginal-rectal swabs collected from pregnant women.

Routine susceptibility test performed on patients with penicillin allergy. Turnaround time for susceptibility testing is 24 hours from Organism Identification.

Swabs of lower vagina (not cervical) and anorectum. 
VAGAN is the specimen source mnemonic.

Culturette II Swabs

 

May be collected with dual BD CultureSwabs (one vaginal and one rectal)

or an Eswab by first swabbing the vagina and then the rectum with a single swab.

Specimen Stability Information

Ambient

Stability: 24 hours at room temperature.

Specimen should be maintained at room temperature. 

Protect from excessive heat and cold.

  • Specimens other than vaginal/rectal swabs will be rejected
  • Lacking Two Patient Identifiers:
    • 1-Patient's First & Last name 
    • 2-Patient's Date of Birth
  • Specimen collected >24 hrs before laboratory processing
