Additional Information
Transferrin (TRF) is the principal plasma protein for transport of iron. Its concentration correlates with the total iron-binding capacity. Evaluation of TRF is useful for the diagnosis of anemia and for monitoring its treatment. In the common disease iron deficiency of hypochromic anemia, the TRF level is increased owing to increased synthesis, but the protein is less saturated with iron because plasma iron levels are low. On the other hand, if the anemia is due to a failure to incorporate iron into red blood cells, the TRF level is normal or low but the protein is highly saturated with iron.
Transferrin is now available as a stand-alone test. Alternatively, total iron, total iron binding capacity (TIBC), transferrin, and % transferrin saturation are available as a group (Order Code: TIB).
