Additional Information
Thyroid function test. Important tool in the assessment of the origin, extent and management of thyroid disease. In cases of primary hypothyroidism, T3 and FT4 levels are low and TSH significantly elevated. In the case of pituitary dysfunction, normal or marginally elevated TSH levels are often seen despite reduction in FT4 and/or T3 levels. Primary hyperthyroidism (Graves disease, thyroid adenoma or nodular goiter) is associated with high levels of FT4 and/or T3 with depressed or undetectable levels of TSH.
