Test Code LAB1235539 Votatile Alcohol Panel (Includes Ethylene Glycol)

Important Note

This test includes two ARUP tests: 0090131 (Alcohols) and 0090110 (Ethylene Glycol)

Useful For

Ethylene Glycol: Aid in assessment of the etiology of anion gap acidosis. Determine whether ethylene glycol poisoning exists.

Alcohols: Use to identify ethanol, methanol, isopropanol, or acetone ingestion. For medical purposes only.

Performing Laboratory

ARUP Laboratories

Specimen Required

Plain Red top tube

Also acceptable: Lavender (K2 or K3EDTA) or Pink top tube K2 EDTA.

Separate serum or plasma from cells within 2 hours of collection. Transfer 1 mL serum or plasma to an ARUP Standard Transport Tube. (Min: 0.5 mL). Cap tube tightly to minimize alcohol loss. When drawing a blood specimen for ethylene glycol testing, use a nonalcohol-based cleanser at the venipuncture site.

Specimen Stability Information

Transport: Refrigerated preffered.

Stability after separation from cells:

  • Ambient: 1 week
  • Refrigerated: 1 week
  • Frozen: 1 month

Reject Due To

  • Whole blood
  • Gel separator tubes
  • light blue (citrate)
  • yellow (SPS or ACD solution)
  • Plasma Separator Tubes (PST)

Day(s) Performed

Interpretation

Alcohols: This test was developed and its performance characteristics determined by ARUP Laboratories. It has not been cleared or approved by the US Food and Drug Administration. This test was performed in a CLIA certified laboratory and is intended for clinical purposes.

Ethylene Glycol: Toxic concentrations may cause intoxication, CNS depression, metabolic acidosis, renal damage and hypocalcemia. Ethylene glycol is extremely toxic. Ingestion can be fatal if patients do not receive immediate medical treatment.

This test was developed and its performance characteristics determined by ARUP Laboratories. It has not been cleared or approved by the US Food and Drug Administration. This test was performed in a CLIA certified laboratory and is intended for clinical purposes.
