Peripheral Collection: Clean the venipuncture site using ChloraPrep One-Step Frepp Applicator (Chlorhexidine gluconate 2% w/v and Isopropyl alcohol 70% v/v). Pinch the wings on the applicator to break the ampule and release the antiseptic. Do not touch the sponge. Wet sponge by repeatedly pressing and releasing the sponge against the treatment area until liquid is visible on the skin. Use repeated BACK-AND-FORTH strokes of the applicator for approximately 30 seconds. Completely wet the treatment area with antiseptic. Allow the cleansed site to DRY for a minimum of 30 seconds.

ChloraPrep is not used for children <2 months.
For children <2 months, the dry time for iodine:  Minimum of 1 minute.

Central Line Collection: per Nursing Policy

The volume of blood obtained from the peripheral draw determines the volume of blood to be obtained through the central line.  Volumes MUST match. Bottles with volumes/times that do not match, will be reordered as routine blood culture(s).

NOTE: Quality results are volume dependent, and every attempt should be made to not overfill or underfill bottles.
