Specimen Required

Sterile collection cup without additive.  Refrigerate after collection and return to the lab within 48 hours.

 

Patient should wait at least 1 week after barium procedures or laxative administration before collecting stools.

Specimen Minimum Volume

10 ml raw stool

 

Specimen Stability Information

Store in refrigerator (2-8°C).

  • Lacking Two Patient Identifiers:
    • 1-Patient's First & Last name 
    • 2-Patient's Date of Birth
  • Diapers are not acceptable.
  • Stools should not be contaminated with urine, water, or soap.  
  • Frozen specimens not acceptable

Cautions

The PCR test is a very sensitive and specific test for Giardia lamblia, Cryptosporidium parvum or hominis and Entamoeba histolytica. It may detect organisms that cannot be found in traditional microscopic Ova and Parasite microscopic examinations.
