Profile Information

Bacterial pathogens inlcuded in testing:

  • Shigella/Enteroinvasive E. coli (EIEC)
  • Shiga toxin
  • Campylobacter jejuni/coli
  • Salmonella spp

This is a very sensitive and specific test for Shigella/Enteroinvasive E. coli (EIEC), Shiga toxin, Campylobacter jejuni/coli, and Salmonella spp. Specimens positive for Shigella/EIEC, Shiga toxin and Salmonella spp. will be cultured and the resulting isolates sent to OPHL for typing. PCR testing is more sensitive than stool culture, so organisms from samples with positive PCR may not always be recoverable. Susceptibility testing is not usually recommended for organisms isolated from stool cultures, but susceptibility testing will be performed on Shigella and Salmonella isolates if specifically requested. Shiga toxin is most often produced by E. coli O157 (EHEC), but it may also be produced by other strains of E. coli, some Shigella spp. and even (rarely) other Enterobacteriaceae.
