Useful For

Isolation and identification of yeast and/or filamentous fungi from body fluid, abscess drainage, CSF, respiratory, tissue or urine collections.

Reflex Testing may include:

Definitive Identification (Fungal)

Tissue Grind; Cytospin

Special Instructions

Place all material in a sterile container, when possible.

 

NOTE: Swabs are not recommended for most fungus cultures.  If unavoidable, use culturette swab.  Send to laboratory within 24 hours.

Specimen Required

CSF

Minimum 1 cc spinal fluid in sterile container

 

Respiratory (non-sputum), Tissue, Biopsy

Sterile container

 

Body Fluids/Abscess/Drainage

Aspirate and submit capped syringe or place in sterile container.

 

Sputum

Collect 1st morning, deep cough specimen.  24-hour collections are unacceptable.

 

Urine

Collect mid-stream urine, preferably early morning specimen, into a sterile container.

24 hours at room temperature.

NOTE: Cultures cannot be ordered STAT or ASAP.  Smear within 24 hours.

 

Report Available

Preliminary reports sent weekly until final at 4 weeks.  If reflex testing is required, test results will be delayed.
