E-Swab or capped sterile syringe for abscess, aspirates or drainage.

Stable 24 hours room temperature or refrigerated at 2°-8° C

48 hours room temperature or refrigerated at 2°-8° C if an Eswab is used

Lacking Two Patient Identifiers:
- 1-Patient's First & Last name
- 2-Patient's Date of Birth
Unsuitable specimens include:
- Cervical swab
- Endocervical swab
- Lochia
- Vaginal or vulval swab
- Urethral swab
- Perineal swab
- Bronchioalveolar lavage (unprotected)
- Endotracheal aspirate
- Nasopharyngeal swab
- Sputum (induced or expectorated)
- Prostatic or seminal fluid
- Tracheostomy aspirate
- Urine from bladder or catheter
- Stool (unless for infant botulism or malabsorption syndrome).
Do not use swabs for fluid specimens

Preliminary reports are usually available at 24 hours
Cultures that are from sterile sites and are no growth are held 5 days for the detection of slow- growing organisms
If reflex testing is required, test results will be delayed.
