PTH assay is useful in the differential diagnosis of hypercalcemia caused by either primary hyperparathyroidism or malignant disease.

Centrifuge collection tube within 2 hours of draw
If the assay will not be completed within 8 hours, refrigerate samples at 2°- 8°C for no longer than 48 hours
If the assay will not be complete within 48 hours, or for shipment of samples, freeze at -20°C or colder for no longer than 6 months
