Test Code LAB106 B-Type Natriuretic Peptide

Useful For

B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) is a potent natriuretic, diuretic and vasorelaxant peptide.  It coordinates fluid and electrolyte homeostasis through its activity in the central nervous system and peripheral tissues.  BNP promotes vascular relaxation and lowers blood pressure, particularly in states of hypervolemia.  Its renal effects include increasing glomerular filtration rate and enhancing sodium excretion.  BNP reinforces diuretic effects by suppressing centers for salt appetite.B-Type Natriuretic Peptide (BNP) is a hormone released into the blood in response to increased heart pressure. The BNP test is indicated as an aid in the diagnosis and assessment of severity of congestive heart failure and the risk stratification of patients with acute coronary syndrome.

Specimen Minimum Volume

0.5 ml

Specimen Stability Information

Samples should be centrifuged and refrigerated within 7 hours of collection

After centrifugation, aliquoted samples (or samples with a gel barrier) are stable 24 hours refrigerated at 2-8°C.

• For longer storage, transfer at least 500 μL of cell-free sample to a storage tube. Tightly stopper the tube immediately and freeze at -20 °C or colder in a non-defrosting freezer. When thawing, allow samples to equilibrate to room temperature for a minimum of 30 minutes prior to testing.

• Thaw samples only once.

• It is recommended to avoid using severely hemolyzed specimens whenever possible. If a specimen appears to be severely hemolyzed, another specimen should be obtained and tested

Reject Due To

  • Severe Hemolysis (4+ or greater)
  • Quantity not sufficient (QNS)
  • Lacking Two Patient Identifiers:
    • 1-Patient's First & Last name
    • 2-Patient's Date of Birth
