Test Code LAB103 Magnesium, Serum or Plasma

Useful For

Magnesium deficiency produces neuromuscular disorders.  It may cause weakness, tremors and convulsions.  Decreases may be seen in malnutrition, alcoholism, acute pancreatitis, severe diarrhea and following GI
surgery.  Elevated levels are observed in uremia, growth hormone therapy, Vitamin D intoxication, Addison’s disease and the treatment of preeclampsia.

Specimen Required

Specimen Minimum Volume

0.5 mL

Neonatal minimum volume: 0.4 mL whole blood

  • Cord blood is an acceptable sample type

Specimen Stability Information

Centrifuge and refrigerate within 2 hours of collection. 
Spun SST is stable for 48 hours at 2° to 8° C.

Reject Due To

  • Hemolysis
  • Quantity not sufficient (QNS)
  • Lack of Two Patient Identifiers:
    • 1-Patient's First & Last name 
    • 2-Patient's Date of Birth
