Specimen Requirements

Yellow (Gold) top tube (SST)  

Lithium Heparin Green top tube

Plain Red top tube

 

Outpatient clients MUST draw SST

Specimen Transport Temperature and Stability

Centrifuge and refrigerate within 2 hours of collection

Primary tube: Spun SST stable 24 hours at  2° to 8° C

Serum stable 48 hours if aliquoted and refrigerated at 2° to 8° C

Specimen Minimum Volume

0.3 mL

Lipemia

Hemolysis

Quantity not sufficient (QNS)

Lack of Two Patient Identifiers:

         1-Patient's First & Last name 

         2-Patient's Date of Birth

Additional Information

Acetaminophen is a popular non-prescription pain reliever.  It is frequently seen in overdose cases. 

Proper management of an overdose requires careful monitoring of serum levels.  Toxic doses can cause liver necrosis which is not clinically evident for 12 or more hours.  Antidotes are available if administered early.
