Specimen Requirements

Yellow (Gold) top tube (SST)  

Lithium Heparin Green top tube

Plain Red top tube  

 

Outpatient clients MUST draw SST

Specimen Transport Temperature and Stability

Centrifuge and refrigerate within 2 hours of collection
Spun SST is stable for 48 hours at 2° to 8° C

Specimen Minimum Volume

0.5 mL

Reasons for Rejection

Hemolysis

Quantity not sufficient (QNS)

Lack of Two Patient Identifiers:

         1-Patient's First & Last name 

         2-Patient's Date of Birth

Day(s) Test Set Up

Routine - same day

ASAP - 2 hours after receipt of specimen in lab

STAT - 1 hour after receipt of specimen in lab

Additional Information

Uric acid measurements are used in the diagnosis and treatment of numerous renal and metabolic disorders, including renal failure, gout, leukemia, psoriasis, starvation or other wasting conditions and of patients receiving cytotoxic drugs.
