Specimen Requirements

Collect nasopharyngeal specimen on a sterile, flocked flexible-shaft NP swab and place into 3 mL M-4 viral transport media. 

 

Direct Nasal swabs can be collected but are not preferred.

 

Alternatively, rayon, foam, HydraFlock® Flocked swab (standard tip), Copan Standard Flocked swab, or polyester nasal swabs can be used to collect nasal swab samples. Copan Flocked swabs will be used exclusively at this facility. The specimen of choice will be a Nasopharyngeal specimen.

 

Swabs will be placed in M4-RT Viral transport media and transported at 4° C to the laboratory promptly.

Specimen Transport Temperature and Stability

Direct Nasal  Swab specimens should be tested as soon as possible after collection. If immediate testing is not possible, the nasal swab can be held at room temperature (18-22°C) for up to two (2) hours prior to testing. If the swab will be held longer than two (2) hours, it must be refrigerated at 2-8oC and tested within 24 hours from the time of sample collection.

Swabs in transport media can be held at room temperature for up to eight(8) hours prior to testing. If the sample is to be held longer thatn eight (8) hours, it must be refrigerated at 2 – 8 °C and tested within 24 hours of sample collection.

Reasons for Rejection

  • Brain Heart Infusion Broth is not suitable for this procedure.

 

Calcium alginate and Puritan Purflock® Ultra flocked swabs are not suitable for use in this assay.
